Theory
Theory is the logic behind music. How it works on a technical basis. Understanding your notes and their relationship to one another allows freedom to write what you want as opposed to flinging riffs until something sticks. Theory also encompasses elements common to all music so this section is especially important if you want to play in a band or compose music with multiple instruments. This section is smaller than others but that is because a little bit of theory goes a long way – repeat lessons until you really understand it.
The basics of theory are knowing that scales are made of 7 notes from A – G. Finding them on the fretboard is the key.
Some theory on how chords are made and played on guitar. A light bit of notation and tablature for reference. And how major and minor works.
The circle of 4ths which is an absolutely essential lesson on how to pair chords and scales. The beautiful theory behind 7th chords and how to use them. And a quick top up on notation showing you how to read key signatures.
9th and 4th chords expand your ability to tweak rhythm sections. Modes bring in some excellent ways to write lead and Intervals show a counterpoint that allows you to understand music at its most basic level.
We start to play with harmony and discord with suspended and added chords, 6ths, interval harmony and 5ths harmony. Include, how to use your modes, and this is a massive level.
This level develops true song composition techniques including modal basslines, harmonising with a second instrument, how to pick intervals by ear, key changes and harmonising with the 3rd. Plus my favourite chord – the sharp 9th (sounds like a major and minor all in one courtesy of Hendrix).
