Scales are the lifeblood of guitar. This is how you shred. It is how you create hooks. It is how you harmonise and layer parts of a song. It is vital. You should learn them all. Practice them till your fingers bleed. It is what will make you great regardless of genre – metal, jazz, rock or pop. As you build your skill and knowledge you will start to discover a new level of guitar playing. The fretboard becomes one endless opportunity for expression as it melds all the positions and intervals into a singular coherent playground. It takes 10 000 repetitions until it becomes instinct – get practicing!
