7 minute music is a project of New Style Teaching
New Style Teaching is an education brand that looks for something different in its way of teaching. The concept of 7 minute music is based upon peoples ability to focus intensely for 7 minutes – any longer and the mind starts to wander. The brain needs time then to process what its just learnt. The idea is that you can load these lessons into your brain and then allow your sub-conscious to process them while you are doing other things. That doesn’t mean you don’t practice – you still need to build muscle memory – rather, you only take in new information in small doses.
On top of this is the concept that music needs freedom. This site has no strict order to progress. Things are set up in levels so you have an idea how advanced a lesson is (trying a level 6 when beginning is going to be a challenge). You are free to bounce between different sections and skills that allow you to develop your own style. This is critical! We need new music, creativity and unique players. You might get right into Technique and run up to level 5 then go back to level 3 Scales to develop some great riff writing skills. You could get into Rhythm for a couple of levels then go to Time to build your song writing capability. You might just want to do every level from start to finish. We have made some links between lessons but there is no right way to do this.
Also, though we don’t do covers and tab here, it’s not like you shouldn’t learn a few songs. There are so many other sites that do this so no point in repeating it here. What you should do is learn some skills here and then go and see where they are used by some awesome musicians. Learn how they use it and let it guide your own development. As far as tab goes just push down the fret number written on the line matching the string – “boom” you can now read tab. When you learn to read some sheet music you understand why its the globally accepted form for communicating music – it works. Tab is so limiting it will restrict you rather than help you. We would rather you work on developing an ear for music and understanding how notes gel together so that you can understand what the chords and scales are. It takes time but you will be a better musician for it.

The Course
What the course coversLessons are little - Music is big
We have 5 sections that are Rhythm, Theory, Scale, Technique, and Time. Each lesson covers a skill based upon the section but often will link to other sections and skills. A focus on two sections will build skills into a specialisation. You can look at specialisations to help you choose a path for your learning.
